HISTORICAL PROVENANCE
The Papyrus dining table draws its name and inspiration from a papyrus-adorned capital that once crowned the column of a kiosk built in front of the Temple of Amun at Hibis, in the Kharga Oasis in Egypt. Dating from 380–343 BCE, the original column at the Metropolitan Museum of Art combines stylized representations of both common papyrus and the edible sedge—an early example of what are known as composite capitals, which unite decorative botanical forms into a cohesive design. Eichholtz pays homage to this heritage by transposing the rhythm and symmetry of the Egyptian capital into the sculptural base of this modern table.
